Tim Russert, Part 2

I was going to try to keep coverage of Tim Russert’s death to one post, but this topic deserves its own post. Desperate for second-day stories, the news tide has start to turn from Russert tributes to lessons we can learn from Russert’s death.

NYT’s TVDecoder talks about what other journalists are talking about — how will NBC replace its most seasoned political reporter so close to a presidential election, and how will the network fare without the leadership of the ultimate workaholic?

In that same story, Ted Koppel preaches:

“I think we need to learn something from this. You can’t work people 20 hours a day, month after month after month after month, without some kind of consequences. I don’t know what it was that was wrong with Tim. I don’t know why Tim died. But all I can say is that man worked too hard.”

Meanwhile, at Newsweek, a report explains exactly how Tim died.

  1. Has any outlet reported on what Russert was working on when he died? Seem like a big hole in the reporting.

  2. The comparison is accurate, as far as it goes. However,it omits the MSNBC coverage which was non-stop for five days. I realize there was nothing comparable when Jennings died.

More interesting is the sense that people complaining about the coverage being over the top make no distinction between NBC News and msnba shows.
